Slate Gallery is proud to present Koegel, Roudané, Sharer and Wolff, a group exhibition of recent abstract paintings by participating Brooklyn artists: Charles Koegel, Nickolas Roudané, Corbin Sharer and Jean Wolff.
Architectural and visionary landscapes, fantastic inner journeys and systematic micro/macro relationships surface in the works of these four artists. New York City’s architectural landscape is a point of departure for Charles Koegel who “feels compelled to record and preserve its character”. Working from a rectilinear grid, his technique of layering acrylic over oil paint causes cracked and splintered surfaces which suggest corrosion and urban decay; while his softly glowing palette affirms a sense of renewal. A native New Yorker, Koegel is a 2008 MFA graduate of Pratt and has exhibited at Exit Art. Nickolas Roudané's visionary paintings are explorations into the artist’s imagination. His semi-abstract landscapes are drawn from nature and the visionary, romantic and outsider traditions of painting, architecture, literature and film. The interplay between pictorial space and abstraction leads the viewer through a dynamic journey in and out of fantastical worlds that feels cinematic. Roudané was born in Atlanta, GA, and he graduated with a BFA from Pratt in 2006. His work was included in a 2009 group show at Sculpture Center, NY. Like Roudané, Corbin Sharer works from his inner vision, although he makes no attempt to create recognizable objective forms. His only conscious decision is the choice of his medium and its application. Using meditative techniques and experimenting with music improvisation among other methods, the artist seeks a balance between “interesting stimulus and nonobjective influence”. When successful, he “believes it provides the viewer with a certain visual serenity.” Sharer was born in Lincoln, NE and graduated with a BA from Wayne State College in 2002. Akin to Koegel, Jean Wolff works from a reduced visual vocabulary of primary elements. These elements are the grid, circle and color, and for the artist the possibilities are limitless. Shifting patterns and color, changing scale, or layering to create different levels of density, the circle and grid are deconstructed or regrouped again. The artist is “exploring the many possible configurations and the relationships of the elements within the canvas plane, in order to create an emotional and visual experience.” Wolff was born in Detroit, MI and received her MFA from Hunter College, NY. She has received grants from Artist’s Space and the Elizabeth Foundation.
