Wennie Huang

I’m interested in how nature and the land act as symbols of national identity, as well as sites for the private documentation of individual experiences. Recently, I've noticed a pattern in the composition of family pictures where people often pose in front of large trees. As a result, my current work attempts to capture the image of actual trees by translating their silhouettes into archetypal forms using the ubiquitous children’s craft media, chenille stems. Cherrymander is the latest in this series of wall-mounted chenille works in the shape of iconic trees reminiscent of vines growing on architectural exteriors, in a manner, as quoted from independent curator, Carol March, “of memory continually growing.”

Northside Piers in Williamsburg on 4th and Kent Ave, by the river!
